How Meditation can give you an advantage in martial arts and in life!
Practicing seated meditation, wide-angle vision, and high-stakes engagement such as circle sparring will propel you into the Mushin (無心 — “no mind, no self”) state.
Bagua training retrains the nervous system, developing integrity and creating the foundation for a near-perfect martial art—allowing you to execute the right move at the right time with proper alignment and internal power. Through consistent practice, your programming becomes so deeply ingrained that it fights for you, through you, entering the no-mind state (Mushin) where action flows naturally without conscious interference.
In Kendo, the four sicknesses (四病 — shi-byō) are the mental states that create openings (suki):
Fear (恐 — kyō): Being intimidated or overly concerned with the opponent.
Doubt (疑 — gi): Hesitation and uncertainty about what to do.
Surprise (驚 — kyō / odoroki): Losing composure when something unexpected happens.
Confusion (惑 — waku): A disturbed mind unable to respond clearly.
Mushin (無心 — “no mind, no self”) prevents these by creating a calm, clear awareness free from attachment and ego. Instead of reacting from fear or hesitation, the practitioner perceives the moment directly and responds naturally with proper timing, distance, and technique.
“When the opponent expands, I contract. When he contrtacts, I expand. And when there is an opportunity, I do not hit. It hits all by itself.”- Bruce Lee, Enter The Dragon
You are no longer fighting. IT is fighting for you, through you. Become the empty reed so the water can flow through it. Empty of mind, Empty of ego
